More stuff than I will ever know what to do with. I went with the Producer version since it comes with the new Pro Channel, full Dimension Pro version, and Session Drummer 3. I'd have my hands full with the Studio Edition, but there is solid value in the Producer version and this software is priced very competitively. Installation: Overall good. Four discs come with Producer, yet there's no explanation provided as to which you need beyond the first disc or what you get by installing the additional discs. The included user guide is not the full user guide and is really just a install guide only referencing the base software. I had no idea what I was missing until I searched online and installed the remaining discs, as I don't know what I need Beatscape for, or additional content for example. It isn't clear to me if there's any issue with using 32 bit plug-ins (Beatscape) on a 64 bit install. Only hiccup I had with the install was registration for Dimension Pro: registration will fail (with the wrong error message) if you are not logged in as administrator. Drivers: I tried installing on both a 32 bit Win XP notebook (Core 2 Duo T9600, 4GB, SSD) and a 64 bit Win 7 Desktop (Core 2 Extreme 9750, 8GB). I had to manually change the audio driver mode to MME 32 on the notebook before I could hear any sound (mentioned in the Welcome pamphlet). Then, I could only hear wave outputs, not MIDI. Only the first note of any MIDI sequence was played! After reading forums I decided to try to increase the latency from 250 to 300ms. Now a few more notes play! Tried 500ms and that seems to work fine. I'm sure it's specific to the weak sound chip in my notebook. On my desktop, everything worked except that I had to manually specify which of the 4 available digital output pairs to use with my onboard audio. So long story short, laptop users may have to experiment to get a working output. V-Vocal: This is a plugin for pitch correction that is surprisingly fun to play with. My tone is soo far off autocorrect couldn't dream of making sense of it. I found that if I record once, manually bring the notes on tune, the result will be too funky to be directly usable. However, if I use that output to guide me on a second pass, V-Vocal can make usable corrections. I still haven't figured out all the knobs though. MIDI Controller: I chose the Roland/Cakewalk A-500PRO to work with Sonar X1. Integration works well using ACT; there's little to set up aside from adding the A-500PRO 'A-PRO 2' to the ACT controls in preferences. Sort Your Music. Latency: There will always be some latency from processing to output, and its going to depend on your input devices and output devices, many of which Sonar will have no control over. The only time where this really matters is a live performance, which I can't speak to. However, anything else will and will always have to be adjusted during composition. Regardless, whatever latency is there is very low. On my laptop where I had to set a 500ms latency value for the MIDI output driver, recording sound through my AT2020 USB mic still lines up with the other layers. Final thoughts: The single biggest feature that sold me on Sonar over Pro Tools was the standard registration/activation model. Cakewalk Sonar X1 LeI hated the idea of needing to carry an iLock and be dependent on a 'dongle' for my software to work. I browsed the forums for both products and Cakewalk really seems to understand the value of this, so hopefully this form of copy protection doesn't change. Also, it is a shame the full user manual is not included, but it's huge so I understand why. • • Backup & Installation Notes • Always make a backup of the files that are overwritten by the File Archive, as the original files are usually required to update the game to a newer version or to play Online!
